MiaoSense: AI-powered Android app estimates a cat's mood without sending a single image to the internet

The AI analysis runs entirely on the smartphone. No account, no cloud, no subscription.

Munich, September 2026 — Anyone who lives with a cat is familiar with the question that keeps coming back: what mood is she in right now? MiaoSense is an Android app that lets people take a closer look at their own cat's body language. Point the phone's camera at the cat, and the app combines facial expression, posture and movement into an AI-based assessment of its mood. The result appears live in the camera view: a colored frame around the cat, with the estimated mood shown above it along with how confident the app is in that estimate. MiaoSense is available on Google Play in eight languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese and Korean.

The analysis stays on the device

All AI models are built into the app in ONNX format and run on the phone's processor. No photos, no audio and no analysis results are transferred to a cloud. There is no server to which images from inside the home would be uploaded, which is also why the analysis works without an internet connection. No account is needed; the app starts without any sign-up. Users who want to remove their data can delete it from within the app in Settings with one confirmed action. The right to erasure under Article 17 of the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is thus implemented technically, rather than described as a request procedure.

For a cat app, this is not a minor detail. A camera pointed into a living room or bedroom sees much more than the cat. MiaoSense processes those images where they are taken.

An estimate, not a medical finding

MiaoSense describes what is visible and does not assess it medically. The output is a probability-based estimate of mood, not a statement about the animal's health. Before the app can be used, users expressly accept the terms of use and a disclaimer to that effect. Anyone who is worried about their cat should see a veterinarian. At most, the app can serve as a memory aid there, because its history places earlier observations next to today's.

Try it free, pay once

Three analyses, one cat profile and the history of the past seven days are free. The full version, MiaoSense Pro, costs $8.99 as a one-time purchase in the United States; there is no subscription. Pro unlocks unlimited analyses, multiple cat profiles with their own history, the full history with an activity heatmap, and a week-over-week comparison.

Pro also includes MiaoWatch. This feature brings the picture from a camera on the user's own network, or from an external webcam of the user's choosing, onto the phone, for example to estimate a cat's mood at a cat boarding facility, provided the facility offers camera access. The phone connects directly to the selected camera, not to a MiaoSense server; here, too, the estimate is calculated entirely on the phone.
